The Poro family launched in 2024 and is still in active use — lighter and faster than Viking, ideal when you need strong Finnish on smaller hardware.
Why pick Poro over Viking?
Poro is smaller and faster. If your work is mainly Finnish and English and you don't need Swedish, Norwegian, Danish or Icelandic, Poro delivers the same quality with less memory. It runs smoothly on a MacBook and NPU laptop.
OpenEuroLLM continues the line
The OpenEuroLLM consortium — including Silo AI, TurkuNLP, AMD and several European universities — will release a new 8B-parameter model in summer 2026 and larger ones later. It continues Poro's work under EU funding and EuroHPC compute.
Frequently asked
- Is Poro still maintained?
- The Poro family is still in use, but active development has moved to Viking and the OpenEuroLLM line. For many use cases Poro remains the best fit.
